Linn Energy (NASDAQ:LINE): Current price $28.85
Linn announced late Monday that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has launched an informal investigation into its financial disclosures and upcoming merger with Berry Petroleum. In a statement, Linn said that it has voluntarily agreed to disclose information to the SEC’s informal review and that the Commission has requested the preservation of documents and communications that are deemed potentially relevant to its proposed merger, its use of non-GAAP financial measures relayed to investors, and also its hedging strategy. However, the firm says that it remains confident it will finish its merger with Berry, and that this informal inquiry should not be seen as a negative view of its operations by the SEC.
Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX): Current price $14.65
Subsequent to a Jefferies downgrade on the ratings on four names in the gold mining sector, stocks are falling but at the same time remain expensive, given their sharp declines so far in 2013 due to the recent slump in the price of gold and difficulties in mining the metal, according to a note by the Jefferies analyst Peter Ward written earlier Tuesday. Ward has downgraded Barrick Gold from Outperform to Hold.
