Sony Aims to Challenge Apple and Google on This Front

Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Steve Jobs wasn’t alone in his dream to revinvent TV. Sony Corporation’s (NYSE:SNE) CEO Howard Stringer also shares some ambitions for change.

Last week, Stringer remarked at a media breakfast that Sony was working a “different type of TV to revitalize the market.” The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the company wants to launch an “Internet-based alternative to cable TV service.” That’s bad news for cable companies such as Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC), Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA), Cablevision (NYSE:CVC), as well as satellite companies DirecTV (NASDAQ:DTV) and Dish Network (NASDAQ:DISH).

Sony has allegedly held talks with TV network owners; however, the owners don’t appear willing to step up, fearing it would upset cable operators.

This is nothing new as Apple and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) have faced similar resistance in their efforts to create TV platforms that utilize the the web.
