S&P 500 Winners: DirecTV, Salesforce and Akamai Prices Rise

The S&P 500 (NYSEARCA:SPY) is down today by 0.05% and stands at 1,291. Here are three better performing stocks as the index recovers mid-day.

A deal between Samsung and DIRECTV (NASDAQ:DTV) allowing the former’s Smart TVs to directly access the latter’s satellite feeds is another sign that the end is near for set-top boxes, says Ryan Lawler. A decline in set-top box shipments caused by the growing use of direct-access technologies such as RVU would spell trouble for market leaders Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) and Motorola (NYSE:MMI). DTV shares recently traded at $44.35, up $1.32, or 3.07%. They have traded in a 52-week range of $39.82 to $53.40. Volume today was 5,769,307 shares versus a 3-month average volume of 6,043,590 shares. The company’s trailing P/E is 13.82, while trailing earnings are $3.21 per share.

Sanford Bernstein’s Mark Moerdler says growth at Salesforce.com Inc. (NYSE:CRM) is slowing, and the hosted software vendor is buying the competition in order to alleviate this condition. Moerdler concludes that growth in CRM’s traditional customer relationship management business slowed to 22% in 1H 2011 compared to 40% in the previous year. CRM shares recently traded at $105.88, up $1.09, or 1.04%. They have traded in a 52-week range of $94.09 to $160.12. Volume today was 2,936,321 shares versus a 3-month average volume of 3,282,760 shares. The company’s trailing P/E is 7,058.33, while trailing earnings are $0.02 per share.

Akamai Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM) shares sink after Citigroup moves this stock to Sell from Neutral. Two reasons: Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Cloud Front CDN competition, and overreaction to Akamai’s purchase of Cotendo. Regarding the Cotendo deal, it is “not clear that Cotendo will provide Akamai material new products of market opportunities.” AKAM shares recently traded at $34.05, up $0.91, or 2.75%. They have traded in a 52-week range of $18.25 to $52.72. Volume today was 2,828,204 shares versus a 3-month average volume of 4,996,710 shares.
