Technology Sector Review: Skype Being Integrated Into Office, Baidu Branches Out to Brazil

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) CFO Peter Klein spoke at the Goldman Sachs conference, with highlights including an admission that Skype is being integrated into Office similarly to Sharepoint, and a claim that Skype and Lync will amplify each other as opposed to stepping on each others’ toes, according to Digitimes.

The shares closed at $31.28, up $1.24, or 4.11%, on the day. Its market capitalization is $262.51 billion.

Baidu.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) is opening a branch in Sao Paulo, Brazil and a manager for the Chinese company’s operations in Latin America specifically said the move was part of its larger aim to compete with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), reported China Daily, citing a Chinese Ministry of Commerce posting and Brazilian media.

The shares closed at $141.83, up $3.51, or 2.54%, on the day. Its market capitalization is $49.50 billion.

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC): Wind River and Digia, Qt Commercial, a pioneer in the commercial development, licensing, support and services of Qt for desktop and embedded development, announced a collaboration to offer broad market availability and primary platform support for the Qt Commercial development framework on Wind River’s VxWorks real-time operating system.

The shares closed at $26.83, up $0.25, or 0.92%, on the day. Its market capitalization is $136.59 billion.

Syntel, Inc. (NASDAQ:SYNT): Reports revenue $172.4M vs. consensus $169.14M.

Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI) announced that the City of Madison, Wisc., Water Utility will implement Itron’s advanced metering infrastructure for Project H2O, the city’s program to automate the collection and analysis of water meter reads. The solution will allow Madison to effectively manage conservation initiatives, improve metering accuracy and operate more efficiently. Installation using services from Wisconsin-based Corix Utilities and Madison Laborers Union Local 464 is expected to be complete by early 2013.
