10 of the Wealthiest World Leaders
With Donald Trump having been elected president, we’re now set to see a billionaire enter the White House. There have been rich men in charge before, but this time? This time is a bit different. Trump’s wealth is what has propelled him to stardom, and now the presidency. Like many other world leaders, he has vast amounts of money and likes to let others know about it.
But where does he rank when it comes to other world leaders? According to a fun little experiment from the U.K.’s Lottoland, it’s not at the top.
“While politicians like to go to great lengths to pretend they’re just ordinary people, run of the mill West Ham (or is it Aston Villa?) fans, they earn salaries that most of us can only dream about,” the exquisitely British brief reads. “Plus, being in a position of power opens doors to big salaries, in-the-know money making ventures, and of course writing off unusual luxury goods as expenses.”
So, where does Trump land? How about Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama? Here are 10 of the world’s wealthiest world leaders, per Lottoland’s research.
10. Nigel Farage
Nigel Farage isn’t as recognizable as some of the other leaders on this list. But Farage is a British politician, most widely known as the leader of the U.K. Independence Party. Lottoland pegs his personal wealth at 2.5 million pounds, or $3.1 million.
9. Angela Merkel
The Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel is one of Europe’s most well-known political leaders. In a previous life, she was actually a scientist. But now, she’s one of the world’s top politicians. Her personal wealth is estimated at 9.4 million pounds, or $11.7 million.
8. Barack Obama
President Obama didn’t come from wealth, but he’s managed to accumulate some as the leader of the free world. The amount he has pales in comparison to some other world leaders, though. Lottoland’s brief claims Obama’s wealth at 9.8 million pounds, or $12 million.
7. Hillary Clinton
Clinton’s political career has effectively ended, but she’s still very much a leader in the eyes of many. Decades of public service behind her, she’s likely to start adding to her personal wealth in coming years. As of right now, her accounts tally up to 37 million pounds, or $46 million.
6. David Cameron
David Cameron, another Brit, was the U.K.’s Prime Minister until just after the “Brexit” vote. He promptly resigned following the voter’s decision to leave the European Union. Cameron’s personal wealth is estimated at 41 million pounds, or around $51 million.
5. Boris Johnson
Boris Johnson is a British politician, having previously worked as a historian and journalist. He’s probably most famously known as the mayor of London, serving from 2008 to 2016. He’s rich, too — though not as rich as some of his cohorts. Lottoland said he has 152 million pounds in his coffers, or around $189 million.
4. Donald Trump
It’s hard to believe that Mr. Trump managed to get elected President of the United States. But he did. And if there’s one thing people know him for, it’s being rich. He’s tallied his own wealth as high as $10 billion. But nobody really knows for sure. Lottoland pegs it at 3 billion pounds, or roughly $3.74 billion.
3. Kim Jong-Un
Another of the world’s “super villains,” if they were to exist, is North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. He’s a mysterious guy like his father was, but apparently, sits on a huge amount of wealth. All the while, locking up dissidents in prison camps and letting his population starve.
Jong-Un has up to 4.1 billion pounds, or $5.1 billion.
2. Silvio Berlusconi
Silvio Berlusconi doesn’t have the name recognition of Putin, but he’s almost as unsavory. As the leader of Italy, he endured several scandals. He is a media tycoon, and even owns one of the most popular soccer teams in the world, A.C. Milan.
Berlusconi’s wealth, per Lottoland, tallies up to 5.7 billion pounds, or $7.1 billion.
1. Vladimir Putin
Putin has more or less become the de facto James Bond villain. He’s Russian, which makes him an easy adversary, is quite rich, and is actually quite scary. But few realize just how rich Putin actually is. Putin, if Lottoland isn’t off its mark, has an insane amount of money. They mark it at 164 billion pounds. Translated into U.S. currency, that’s more than $204 billion.
That would put him up there with the richest people of all time. The issue, though, is that it’s hard to verify all of that wealth for sure.
