Toyota and Capital One to Companies: Hire Veterans
Memorial Day was founded as a federal holiday to commemorate the sacrifices of soldiers in the U.S. Civil War but now includes all U.S. veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. Those watching the Indianapolis 500 race today may have noticed one of the television advertisements promoting the hiring of U.S. veterans. Both Capital One (NYSE:COF) and Toyota (NYSE:TM) are partners of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s “Hiring Our Heroes” campaign.
The Hiring Our Heroes campaign focuses on helping veterans return to civilian employment — often a difficult transition. Veterans possess many unique skills and are unparalleled when working with teams and under pressure but often have difficulty translating their unique experiences into the resume and cover letter format employers expect. A number of major U.S. companies want to change that. Capital One is part of the “Hiring 500,000 Heroes” program and Toyota is part of the “Personal Branding Resume Engine” program — both part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s campaign to transition veterans back into the workforce.
From the campaign’s website page on the Hiring 500,000 Heroes program: “Hiring veterans and military spouses for your company isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s the smart thing to do. These Americans have years of the best training and possess extraordinary skills. They show up early, leave late, know how to work in teams, how to manage people and materials, and they can adapt to ever-changing environments under demanding pressures…That’s why the National Chamber Foundation and Capital One are teaming up to present Hiring 500,000 Heroes, a multi-year initiative to work with businesses to make commitments to hire 500,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2014.” Hiring 500,000 veterans and military spouses is a noble goal.
From the campaign’s website page on the Personal Branding Resume Engine program: “Hiring Our Heroes, Toyota, and Medal of Honor Recipient Sgt. Dakota Meyer are proud to introduce the Personal Branding Resume Engine. This next generation online tool is designed specifically for veterans and transitioning service-members. Much more than a Military Occupational Specialty (NYSE:MOS) translator, the Resume Engine captures the totality of a veteran’s military experience – including awards, deployments, and military schooling – and helps put them into civilian terms.” A good number of U.S. veterans will benefit greatly from the resume building software Toyota is sponsoring.
Monster.com (NYSE:MWW) and General Electric (NYSE:GE) are also helping out. General Electric has launched a “GE Veterans Network Transition Assistance Program” that offers employment workshops for veterans throughout the country. Monster.com has partnered with Military.com to provide a “Veteran Employment Center” at Monster.com’s website.
This Memorial Day, let us give thanks for those U.S. soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice but not forget the difficulties veterans face when coming home. Thanks to the efforts of Monster.com, General Electric, Capital One, Toyota, and the many companies that hire veterans, the transition may have just gotten a little easier.
