Verizon and Microsoft Merge TV and Gaming

In December, Xbox Live Gold members will be getting a new app for their Xbox 360 consoles. The new app, Verizon (NYSE:VZ) Fios TV, will allow Verizon’s cable and Internet customers access to 26 different channels on Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) popular gaming console. Verizon did not say what channels will be available, but did say it will depend “on the customer’s TV package.”

Last month, Microsoft announced agreements with approximately 50 companies around the world, including NBCUniversal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) Bravo network and Time Warner’s (NYSE:TWX) HBO, to stream their content via the Xbox. Microsoft is depending on users being lured in by the prospect of changing channels with the flick of a finger using its Kinect motion-gaming device. Verizon said Kinect owners would be able to control its Fios TV service with “voice and gesture commands” through the peripheral.

Verizon is also offering a bundle deal that includes Fios TV service with Verizon Internet and phone service. The bundle starts at $89.99 a month. Customers who sign up before January 21 also get 12 free months of Xbox Live Gold service and a Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary game.
