Verizon Rumored to Partner with RedBox

Verizon (NYSE:VZ) is planning talks with various content producers to provide streaming video and downloads. Sources at TechCrunch say Verizon will be partnering with RedBox (NASDAQ:CSTR) and hope to start TV and movie streaming and download services May 28.

Called Project Zoetrope internally, the service will offer subscriptions, streaming and downloading for TV and movies.  It will be available for use on platforms such as Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, Android, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) TV, Xbox (NASDAQ:MSFT), and Roku. The move is a major threat to Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX).

The devices will stream in SD or HD and there will be local storage of video available. Blackouts and release timings are still being discussed, but it will not be a quick-release channel for new movies or live TV. The beta version is due out in late April. The price will be monthly for a specific amount of movies and/or shows with several pricing options.
