Visa’s Holiday Shopping Survey Conflicts with American Express

Visa Inc (NYSE:V) found in its annual gift-giving survey that only a not-so-encouraging 7% of holiday shoppers are likely to increase their shopping budgets this year. Worse, 31% of shoppers have smaller budgets.

Here are some interesting facts on gift habits: 45% have a minimum one unopened gift from last year; 26% returned at least one gift; 22% re-gifted gifts.

Visa’s (NYSE:V) survey is very much in line with an earlier report by Accenture. However, the gloomy outlook was tempered by American Express (NYSE:AXP) which estimated holiday travelers are expected to spend more.

Regardless of surveys, retailers (NYSEARCA:XRT) are already on the warpath laying claim to shrinking purses by using gimmicks such as midnight store openings and discounts to lure shoppers into stores.
