J&J is recalling some 5,000 vials of its Risperdal Consta, which is a long-acting drug for patients suffering from schizophrenia, after testing discovered that the medicine was no longer sterile. Spokeswoman Robyn Reed Frenze for the company’s Janssen unit said that routine analysis indicated that one lot of the injected drug was contaminated with alternaria alternata, a common mold found in the environment — though there have not been any reports of complications among patients who received the medicine despite possible injection site reactions.
