Tweens may be screaming, but Summit Entertainment is laughing to the bank. At midnight last night, new age vampire drama The Twilight Saga: Eclipse sold out across the land and raked in a record $30 million. The best part for Summit: they also hold the previous record of $26.3 million set by The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
Moreover, eclipse set a new IMAX (Nasdaq: IMAX) record of $1 million in tickets sold — beating out the action-packed Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Eclipse is now on pace to follow New Moon‘s path to $710 million at the global box office. All eyes are now watching to see if Eclipse can also take out New Moon‘s record for the biggest single-day gross in box office history: $72.7 million. Achieving either of those goals would be great since Eclipse reportedly cost $68 million to produce and market.
New Moon stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner. New Moon was directed directed by Chris Weitz.
