Warren Buffett: Berkshire Hathaway’s Big Stock Positions Change

Following is some information regarding Berkshire Hathaway‘s (NYSE:BRKA) stock holdings for the quarter ending September 30th, 2011.  First, though, a brief over view of changes in Berkshire’s equity portfolio in the third quarter.  Berkshire added to its holdings in International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE:WFC), M&T Bank Corp. (NYSE:MTB), Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG), and Torchmark Corp. (NYSE:TMK).  Berkshire acquired positions in the following companies: Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), Visa, Inc. (NYSE:V), CVS Caremark Corporation (NYSE:CVS), DirecTV (NASDAQ:DTV), and General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE:GD).  It reduced its holdings in Kraft Foods (NYSE:KFT), Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP).

Its portfolio’s aggregate market value at the end of the second quarter was $56.621 billion as compared to an aggregate market value of $59.067 billion at the end of the third quarter.  Its median holding at the end of the second quarter was $1.715 billion against $1.789 billion at the end of the third quarter.  As the following data show, its holdings are very heavily skewed toward its largest holdings.  The smallest holding in the portfolio, Comdisco Holding Co., Inc. (CDCO) had a market value of $9.384 million at the end of the third quarter.
