The wage gap has been a hot topic lately, especially in Hollywood. The pay disparity between men and women can be shocking. For example, many were angry when they heard Mark Wahlberg received $5 million for All the Money in the World, but actress Michelle Williams was paid just $625,000. That means Williams received less than 1% of Wahlberg’s pay, reports Fortune.

However, one person you won’t hear complaining about the wage gap is actress Amy Adams. You’d be quite surprised to learn why, but we’ll get to that in a minute.

Salary controversy

You might think Adams is shying away from complaining about the state of Hollywood salaries because she gets paid what her male counterparts do. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Adams isn’t paid nearly as much as her male co-stars. In fac, there were lots of rumblings once it was revealed how much Adams’ co-stars were being paid for the film American Hustle.

Her salary was criticized after Sony was hacked in 2014 and leaked emails revealed that she and actress Jennifer Lawrence were paid less than co-stars Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale. Lawrence was so outraged she even wrote an open letter in Lena Dunham’s online publication, Lenny. Lawrence expressed her frustration about how women are expected to quietly accept the pay disparity. She wrote about how a male co-worker tried to quiet her down after she calmly expressed her feelings about the wage gap:

The man I was working with (actually, he was working for me) said, “Whoa! We’re all on the same team here!” As if I was yelling at him. I was so shocked because nothing that I said was personal, offensive, or, to be honest, wrong. All I hear and see all day are men speaking their opinions, and I give mine in the same exact manner, and you would have thought I had said something offensive.

Why Amy Adams won’t complain about the gender pay gap

Adams told The Telegraph she worries that people would think she’s ungrateful if she started a conversation on the topic of wage disparity. The actress says she would prefer to focus on people in other industries who aren’t paid fairly. Adams explained her hesitance:

Everyone wanted me to talk about how I felt about it, but I want to fight for people outside our industry. So, to come out and look ungrateful about what I’m paid as an actress just didn’t feel right. I do believe in equal pay, but let’s start with our teachers. Let’s get waiters paid the minimum wage.

How much Adams is getting paid

Although Adams wasn’t getting paid what she was worth for American Hustle, she seems to have more than made up for it. According to OK! magazine, the actress will earn roughly $300,000 per episode for her role on HBO’s new series Sharp Objects. An insider told the magazine that the production budget has even been cut so they can afford her salary. Said the insider, “Amy’s salary has chewed up so much of the budget that they’re having to film it with minimal lighting and handheld cameras. There are no perks and luxuries on set either, and hardly any extras in the background.”

If Adams keeps this up, she might not even need to have the discussion about pay disparity. Hopefully, the conversation won’t be necessary for her or any other working woman in the future.
