Will Exxon’s Planned Punishment Anger These Top Institutional Shareholders?

The U.S. Department of Transportation proposed penalties totaling $1.7 million against Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) for a July 2011 oil spill in Montana’s Yellowstone River, according to the Associated Press. The department’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration began an enforcement action to respond to allegations that the company didn’t address the risks of river flooding, scour, and erosion to its Silvertip pipeline system. In October, Exxon stated that  it predicts it will pay over $100 million in cleanup operations for the July 2011 rupture near Billings, Montana. Nearly 1,500 barrels of oil spilled from the Silvertip pipeline into the Yellowstone River in the incident.
