Will Microsoft’s Smartphone Software Finally Catch Google and Apple?

Mobile developers could be the key to Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) finally establishing itself in the current two horse race for smartphone software dominance. The Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store and Android Market (NASDAQ:GOOG) each claim over 500,000 apps, but Microsoft’s app platform now supports over 40,000 apps — that’s up from less than 10,000 in February.

Developers may see Windows Phone as a chance to make money in an otherwise crowded mobile app sector. But Microsoft will have to nurture the money making opportunity on their platform to keep developers improving the product for Windows phone users.
