Will Stan Lee Media’s Suit Against Walt Disney Worry Institutional Shareholders?

Walt Disney Co.(NYSE:DIS) has been sued by Stan Lee Media in the United States District Court of Colorado. The media company claims to own the rights to Blockbuster Marvel characters such as Spiderman and Iron Man. They have alleged that the rights to these characters were entrusted to them, in 1998, by their creator, Stan Lee, who, at a later date, again, assigned them to Marvel Enterprises, which Disney acquired in 2009. Stan Lee Media is seeking billions of dollars of profits. According to Reuters, Disney made a statement saying, “This lawsuit is without merit. It arises out of the same core facts and legal claims that have been rejected by three federal district court judges.”
