Will the Abbott Laboratories’ Approval Make These Top Institutional Shareholders Happy?

On Wednesday, a slim majority of advisers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted for approval of Abbott Laboratories’ (NYSE:ABT) implantable heart device MitraClip, as they claimed that it had more benefits than risks, Reuters reports. The eight members of the advisory panel voted unanimously to recommend the device’s safety, leading to a tigh. However, in a tie-breaker vote it voted 5-4 against the question concerning if there was a reasonable assurance MitraClip that would be effective for its intended use. In the end, the members voted 5-3 to agree that the device’s benefits outweighed its risks, and this recommendation is surprising after FDA staff reviewers made negative comments concerning MitraClip on Monday, seeking more data to show the device’s safety and effectiveness.
