Joseph “Joe” Kennedy Sr. invested heavily in Manhattan real estate where he earned more than $100 million. He also amassed a fortune in liquor, B-grade Hollywood movies, oil and gas, and insider trading. He and wife Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy had nine children.

In 1945, the patriarch bought the Merchandise Mart in Chicago for just $12.5 million. (It had cost $30 million to build.) The family went on to sell it in 1998 for $625 million.

2. John Fitzgerald Kennedy

John F. Kennedy, the second child of Joe and Rose, served in World War II. He then was a U.S. Congressman from 1947-1961, after which he became the 35th president of the United States in 1961.

John and wife Jacqueline Kennedy had two children, Caroline and John Jr. (as well as a stillborn daughter and son Patrick who died two days after birth). The president was assassinated in 1963 in Dallas at the age of 46.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Bouvier married John F. Kennedy in 1953. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in French literature, she worked as a newspaper photographer and also devoted much of her life to the arts.

In 1968, five years after the president was assassinated, Jackie married Aristotle Onassis. After his death in 1975, she inherited $26 million.

4. Edward “Ted” Kennedy

Ted Kennedy was the youngest child of Joe Sr. and Rose. He served in the U.S. Senate for 47 years until he died in 2009. He earned $165,200 per year in that role. Along with his siblings, he also had a trust set up in his name by his parents Joe Sr. and Rose.

Ted was involved in a notorious accident off Chappaquiddick Island in 1969, in which his companion Mary Jo Kopechne drowned. He was later convicted of leaving the scene of the crash. His political career survived, nevertheless.

Maria Shriver may be best known as the former wife of former actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, she’s a Kennedy too: Her mother Eunice was the sister of John F. Kennedy, making her his niece. She’s worked as a news anchor and journalist. She served as the first lady of California from 2003-2011.

Shriver and Schwarzenegger have four children together. Their marriage ended in divorce when she discovered he’d fathered a child with their housekeeper.

Robert Kennedy Jr. is the third child of Bobby and Ethel Kennedy. He has a law degree and has considered but decided not to run for political office. He’s been a professor of environmental law for more than 30 years at Pace University School of Law in New York. Kerry Kennedy is the seventh child of Bobby and Ethel. She founded the human rights organization Speak Truth to Power, which honors authors and journalists who stand up to oppression. She has led human rights efforts in El Salvador, Kenya, and other countries.

In addition, she wrote a book called Being Catholic Now: Prominent Americans talk About Change in the Church and the Quest for Meaning. She was married to Andrew Cuomo, and they have three daughters together.

Christopher Kennedy, the eighth child of Robert and Ethel Kennedy, is the former boss of his family’s Merchandise Mart in Chicago. He oversees the family investment firm and unsuccessfully ran in the Illinois gubernatorial primary in 2018 as a Democrat.

During his campaign, he would not reveal his net worth, but the Chicago Tribune estimated it as more than $40 million. Forms he filed showed he and his wife earned more than $1.2 million in 2016.
