Anti-Obamacare Ads Highlight Hispanic Dismay With the ACA



“So Congressman, people demand to know, why do you support this law?” That is the question Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie puts to Representative Joe Garcia (D-Fl.) in an anti-Obamacare ad that began airing Wednesday.

“This law does not put patients first. My patients ask if I will continue to provide care for them, and it pains me to say, ‘I don’t have an answer,’” Christie states. She goes on to explain how canceled plans and higher costs are beginning to affect the South Florida community. Despite the negatives and “broken promises” Garcia continues to support the law.

The ad is part of a larger campaign of the Accountability Project, paid for by the LIBRE Initiative. The spot, which Politico says is broadcast and digital, will run through February 6 in Garcia’s district. More than $700,000 have been spent by LIBRE on ads targeting Garcia; all part of a larger, million-plus dollar effort to scrutinize lawmakers who vote for the healthcare law.

The LIBRE Initiative describes itself as an organization “dedicated to informing the U.S. Hispanic community about the benefits of a constitutionally limited government, property rights, rule of law, sound money supply, and free enterprise.” The conservative organization can then promote the tenants of economic freedom to the Hispanic community. On the issue of healthcare, the LIBRE Initiative believes in access to more affordable healthcare, but disagrees with the government having power over the doctor-patient relationship, and would prefer a market-based system.

In its campaign against Obamacare, the LIBRE Initiative has state-specific information for: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Virginia. It has already aired on ad against Garcia, and the Accountability Project features one against Representative Pete Gallego (D-Tex.) as well.

Hispanic voters heavily favored President Obama in the 2012 election, voting for the Democrat 71 percent of the time. Republican candidate Mitt Romney captured 27 percent. An analysis by Pew has found that during the 2012 cycle, Hispanics comprised a growing share of the voting population in Florida, Nevada, and Colorado.

Work by the LIBRE Initiative in those states may be able to persuade an important segment of the population away from Democrats who voted for Obamacare, tipping the Congressional scales toward Republicans. In addition to countering advertisements, Democrats will have to battle a troubled healthcare exchange website.

Earlier this week, the Associated Press reported on issues that have arisen for the Spanish-language version of the health care website, The website missed its debut-deadline by two months, and is riddled with frustrating language errors. Adrian Madriz, a healthcare navigator who helps with enrollment in Miami said the website is “written in Spanglish,” and that navigators “end up having to translate it for them.”

After investigating the Spanish site with her students, Veronica Plaza — a professor who teaches medical Spanish at the University of New Mexico — they came to the conclusion that “a computer-generated process” translated from English to Spanish. Health and Human Services maintains that the same tools were used to translate the website as were used for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Spanish pages.
