Looking for a Solid Job? Get on a Fortune 500 Board

Compensation consultant Tower Watson released an analysis predicting that Fortune 500 directors could expect a nearly 10% pay raise next year. That would bring median pay from $212,500 to $234,000 for what is on average 4.3 hours per week of board work.

The job description for directors includes determining executive pay, establishing corporate strategy, and overseeing management. USA Today quotes former CEO and author John Gillespie as saying “Far too much of their time has been for check-the-box and cover-your-behind activities rather than real monitoring of executives and providing strategic advice on behalf of shareholders.”

“It sounds like a lot of money for a part-time job, but there are some pretty full-time risks,” says Jan Koors of pay consultant Pearl Meyer & Partners, in USA Today. With more stringent corporate regulations, directors are becoming harder to come by, even with such hefty salaries.
