Warren Buffett: My Latest Billion Dollar Investments

Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKA) recently released its latest 13F filing.  The company holds $53,601,706,000 in public stocks (valued on March 31st 2011).  This compares against total assets on its balance sheet of $372,000,000,000.  In fact, Berkshire Hathaway is so large that the amount of goodwill that it carries on its balance sheet ($49 billion) is almost as large as the value of its public equity holdings.

Though Buffett is popularly known as a stock picker, most of his company’s assets come from sources other than the public equity markets.

That having been said, following is a list of Berkshire’s investments in publicly traded companies that are worth at least $1 billion:

  1. Coca Cola (NYSE:KO): The market value of this holding on March 31st, 2011 was $13,268,001,000, representing 200,000,000 shares. This holding represents 25% of the total portfolio value of $53,601,706,000. About the company: The Coca-Cola Company manufactures, markets, and distributes soft drink concentrates and syrups. The Company also distributes and markets juice and juice-drink products. Coca-Cola distributes its products to retailers and wholesalers in the United States and internationally.
  2. Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE:WFC): The market value of this holding on March 31st, 2011 was $10,864,604,000, representing 342,623,925 shares. This holding represents 20% of the total portfolio value of $53,601,706,000. About the company: Wells Fargo & Company is a diversified financial services company providing banking, insurance, investments, mortgage, leasing, credit cards, and consumer finance. The Company operates through physical stores, the Internet and other distribution channels across North America and elsewhere internationally.
  3. American Express Co. (NYSE:AXP): The market value of this holding on March 31st, 2011 was $6,852,803,000, representing 151,610,700 shares. This holding represents 13% of the total portfolio value of $53,601,706,000. About the company: American Express Company is a global payment and travel company. The Company’s principal products and services are charge and credit payment card products and travel-related services offered to consumers and businesses around the world.

This holding represents 6% of the total portfolio value of $53,601,706,000. About the company: Kraft Foods, Inc. is a food and beverage company. The Company manufactures and markets packaged food products, including snacks, beverages, cheese, convenient meals and various packaged grocery products. Kraft sells its products throughout the world.

About the company: U.S. Bancorp is a diversified financial services company that provides lending and depository services, cash management, foreign exchange and trust and investment management services. The Company also provides credit card services, mortgage banking, insurance, brokerage, and leasing. US Bancorp operates in the Midwest and Western United States.
