Here’s Who Vegas Is Betting On for the CFP National Title
The 2015 college football season has been one for the ages. But as the year starts to wind down, and the best teams in the nation have finished emerging from the pack, we’ll soon end up at the place we’ve been think about since the first kickoff on opening weekend: the supremely awesome College Football Playoff.
In our opinion, last season’s inaugural event was a massive success. It was a relief to finally get to witness the top teams in the country go head-t0-head, with the chance to ink their names in the history books forever. This year, however, we feel the playoff has a chance to be even more memorable.
Through Week 11 of the 2015 season, plenty of familiar faces hold favorable positions in the CFP rankings, and therefore remain firmly in the hunt for the game’s ultimate prize. However, we’ve also seen a few outsiders make strong cases to be included in ultimate winner-take-all affair. With a few weeks still remaining in the season, nothing is yet set in stone. Still, that doesn’t mean folks won’t attempt to predict the outcome. Especially if they reside in Sin City.
Therefore, with Week 11 of the 2015 season in the rearview mirror, here’s a look at who Vegas is betting on for the 2015-16 College Football Playoff National Championship.
5. Oklahoma Sooners
- Odds: 10-1
Thanks to their recent 44-34 victory over the Baylor Bears, the Oklahoma Sooners are now 9-1 on the year and currently hold the No. 7 spot in both the AP poll and CFP rankings. With this group making a late-season surge and quarterback Baker Mayfield performing at a Heisman-worthy level, Bob Stoops may very well find himself leading Oklahoma on grandest stage at the end of the 2015 season.
4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
- Odds: 8-1
Despite losing quarterback Malik Zaire for the season to a fracture ankle he sustained back in September, the Notre Dame Irish, thanks to the big-time play by replacement QB DeShone Kizer, have remained in contention for a spot in the second-ever College Football Playoff. Heading into their Week 12 clash with Boston College, the Irish are 9-1, ranked No. 4 in the CFP standings, and No. 5 in the AP Top 25. Should this team finish the year unblemished, Brian Kelly may find himself in a position to once again coach for a national championship.
3. Clemson Tigers
- Odds: 13-4
Strangely enough, the oddsmakers in Vegas appear to be the only ones not showering the Clemson Tigers with crazy love. Even with quarterback Deshaun Watson owning the competition and the 10-0 Tigers ranked No. 1 in both the AP and the CFP rankings, the folks in Sin City are still only giving Dabo Swinny’s bunch the third best odds to win the College Football Playoff National Championship. If we were Clemson, we’d use this snub as fuel moving forward. And we wouldn’t include these oddsmakers in our soon-to-be pizza party.
2. Ohio State Buckeyes
- Odds: 3-1
After coming into the 2015 season as the first-ever unanimous preseason No. 1 in the history of the AP poll, the Ohio State Buckeyes have been far from the juggernaut most were expecting them to be. While Urban Meyer has the Buckeyes at 10-0, the defending champ are only ranked No. 2 in the AP Top 25 and No. 3 in the most recent CFP rankings. Hopefully now that the coaching staff has finally settled on J.T. Barrett as the team’s starting quarterback we’ll start to see the Buckeyes reach their full potential. Judging from these odds, Vegas seems to think so.
1. Alabama Crimson Tide
- Odds: 9-4
Despite losing earlier to Ole Miss earlier in the season, the Alabama Crimson Tide have really picked up their play as of late. Nick Saban’s crew is 9-1, No. 2 in the most recent CFP rankings, and the No. 3 team in the AP Top 25. With running back Derrick Henry leading the way (both on the field and in the Heisman conversation), the Tide should be rolling right into the College Football Playoff. And if Vegas has anything to say about it, Alabama should be taking the title back home to Tuscaloosa.
