NBA History: LeBron James Dunks on Jason Terry
As we approach the end of February, it’s becoming more obvious which NBA clubs represent the best of the bunch in 2015-16. However, just because the majority of our attention will be focused on the handful of teams that are jockeying for postseason position, that doesn’t mean we’re going to turn away from our regularly scheduled programming. We enjoy sensational dunks way too much for that.
If you’re among those lucky enough have the athletic ability to stuff the ball through the rim (at the appropriate height), then hopefully you’ve had the opportunity to dunk on someone who likes to talk a lot of trash. And if you haven’t been blessed with the good fortune to do so, this one is for you — courtesy of the King himself, LeBron James. You see, while there aren’t many, if any, individuals quite like James, he still understands how annoying trash talkers can be.
This is why, back in 2013 as a member of the Miami Heat, he got such satisfaction when he was able to unleash the fury on Boston’s Jason Terry. “I’ve had a chance to [review] it, and it was one of my better ones,” James said. “The fact that it happened to J.T. made it that much sweeter. Because we all know J.T. and he talks too much sometimes. And I’m glad it happened to him.” As fans of sweet dunks, we’re also happy this happened. And something tells us you’ll feel the same way. So sit back, relax, and enjoy another edition of “Throwback Throwdowns.
On March 18, 2013, the Miami Heat took their show on the road to the TD Garden in Boston. Aside from looking to defeat the rival Celtics, the Heat were hoping to extend their winning streak at the time to 23 games. For much of the contest’s first half, it looked as if Boston had Miami’s number. And then, in one play, LBJ flipped the script. With 5:30 left in the second quarter and the Heat trailing 48-35, Miami’s Norris Cole saw teammate Chris Bosh in the post and looked to hit him with an entry pass.
Despite his good intentions, Cole’s pass was stolen away by Terry. Unfortunately, what started off as a heads-up play by the Celtics guard would quickly turn into a nightmare. Terry tried to advance the ball up the floor, but got careless and was stripped from behind by Dwyane Wade. After stealing the rock from Terry, Wade quickly gave the ball up to Mario Chalmers, who tossed the ball past Terry’s outstretched arms to Cole.
While it first appeared as if Terry was now caught in a two-on-one, the situation was much worse than that. With James trailing the play, it was actually a three-on-one. Terry didn’t see it coming until it was too late. Cole lobbed up the ball, Terry — now a deer caught in headlights — could only watch (before getting knocked to the floor) as the King flew into the picture, caught the lob, and dunked it in his face. And one. The perfect exclamation point.
After the play was over, James wound up getting a technical called on him for staring down Terry. However, in the end, not only did the Heat come away with the 105-103 victory, but ‘Bron got to add the perfect poster to his already budding collection. Now that’s how you handle a trash talker.
