Last night, I had trouble sleeping.
I’d love to blame it on the Cowboys victory, but I’d hate to give them the satisfaction. No, there was no rhyme or reason behind it. I just couldn’t get to dreaming. And then, almost instinctually, I flipped my pillow over. To the cool side. It was exactly what the doctor ordered, and I finally began to doze off. Just like that.
Stuart Scott brought the catchphrase “As cool as the other side of the pillow” (among others) into pop culture lore. And yet, the concept was so simple it’s hard to fathom that no one had used it before. But that’s the beauty of what he brought to the world of sports, and broadcasting, in general.
He took the ordinary, the commonplace, and made it poetic. He exuded swagger. His presence on SportsCenter was something to be treasured. He spoke in a low tone that could both stir excitement in the audience and create a soothing calm. I didn’t know the man, but I watched him so much on television that I felt like I did. And that means something to me. That’s why this ESPN tribute got to me. Sunday was truly a sad day for the world of sports.
Stuart Scott may not longer be with us, but one thing is for certain: The next time I have trouble sleeping, Scott’s words will most definitely pop into my head. And I’ll smile. Flip over the pillow. And know that everything will be cool.
