Utilities Sector Review: Obama Backs Alternative Energy, Germany’s Solar Power Subsidies

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ:CLNE): President Barack Obama said the government would fight high oil prices by easing bottlenecks and permitting, but renewed his call for alternate energy sources, according to Reuters, citing a speech made at the University of Miami. Obama vowed support for vehicles running on advanced biofuels and natural gas, the report noted.

The shares closed at $18.28, up $0.76, or 4.34%, on the day. Its market capitalization is $1.56 billion.

Exterran Partners, L.P. (NASDAQ:EXLP): Exterran Holdings (NYSE:EXH) and Exterran Partners, L.P. (NASDAQ:EXLP) announced that Exterran Partners has agreed to acquire compression and processing assets from Exterran Holdings for consideration valued at approximately $184M. Assets to be acquired by Exterran Partners include: Compression services. Contracts serving approximately 40 customers of Exterran Holdings and its affiliates, together with approximately 400 compressor units used to provide compression services under those contracts, comprising approximately 188,000 horsepower and representing approximately 5 percent of the combined U.S. contract operations business of Exterran Holdings and Exterran Partners. Processing services. A natural gas processing plant with a capacity of 10 million cubic feet per day located in the northeastern United States used to provide processing services pursuant to a long-term services agreement. In connection with and upon the closing of the transaction, the omnibus agreement between Exterran Partners and Exterran Holdings will be amended to reflect adjustments in the cap on selling, general and administrative costs from $9.0 million per quarter to $10.5 million per quarter, while the cap on operating costs will remain at $21.75 per horsepower per quarter.

The shares closed at $24.44, up $0.75, or 3.17%, on the day. Its market capitalization is $910.66 million.

Suntech Power Hldgs. Co (NYSE:STP): Germany plans to reduce its subsidies for solar power by 20.2%-29% beginning on March 9, the country’s environment minister said, according to Bloomberg. Plants supplying more than ten megawatts of power won’t receive any support from the country after July 1, the news service added.

The shares closed at $3.21, down $0.29, or 8.29%, on the day. Its market capitalization is $578.03 million.

American Electric Power (NYSE:AEP): The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio disapproved the electric security rate plan for American Electric’s (NYSE:AEP) Ohio unit as it was outlined in a settlement agreement submitted by 21 of 31 parties to the case. Upon consideration of arguments raised by parties who did not sign the settlement agreement and upon becoming aware of the actual impacts of the agreement, the Commission found that approving the agreement does not benefit ratepayers and is not in the public interest.

The shares closed at $37.91, down $1.93, or 4.84%, on the day. Its market capitalization is $18.31 billion.

Public Service Enterprise (NYSE:PEG): 07:35 EDT PSEG reports Q4 EPS 47c, consensus 48c

The shares closed at $30.50, down $0.46, or 1.49%, on the day. Its market capitalization is $15.43 billion.

Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE): New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced agreements with three California companies, Pacific Gas and Electric (NYSE:PCG), Safeway (NYSE:SWY) and Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE), mandating the disclosure of political spending made with corporate funds. The agreements are the results of DiNapoli’s 2012 shareholder efforts on behalf of the New York State Pension Fund. As of February 10, the fund held 1.4M shares of PG&E, 2.5M shares of Safeway and 1.06M shares of Sempra Energy.

The shares closed at $57.67, down $0.6, or 1.03%, on the day. Its market capitalization is $13.83 billion.
