Verizon Reaches Tentative Agreement with IBEW and 4 Telecom Titans Attracting Interest

AT&T, Inc. (NYSE:T):  Randall L. Stephenson, the chairman and chief executive of AT &T Inc., spoke Wednesday morning at a conference in New York to hundreds of major investors including Fortune 500 executives. The topic was the state of the telecom businesses, however, he began with a request about a different topic – he asked that everyone refrain from texting while driving.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE:S):  Not surprisingly, the iPhone 5 is flying off store shelves as the product goes on sale across the globe. A Sprint representative told AllThingsD that just hours after the Apple smartphone went on sale, many stores had already sold out. The carrier made a statement and said, “At this time, the majority of East Coast Sprint branded retail stores are sold out of iPhone 5 inventory provided to us by Apple. Our stores will be re-supplied as soon as additional devices are received from Apple.”

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ):  Leaders of the Communications Workers and Electrical Workers (IBEW) announced a tentative agreement with Verizon, however some of them said it is far from what they deserve. Many said they’ll vote no. The deal, covering 45,000 workers across the Northeast, was inked after 15 months of tense negotiations including a two-week strike in August 2011.

Vodafone Group PLC. (NASDAQ:VOD):  Accordidng to Bernstein Research, convincing Vodafone (VOD) shareholders that they should jump at a deal to merge the United Kingdom’s phone company with wireless partner Verizon Communications (VZ) would be a “tough sell.”

Alcatel-Lucent, S.A. (NYSE:ALU):  GS Innovations, an independent subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent, S.A,  announced that their1830 Photonic Service Switch (NYSE:PSS) and 1626 Light Manager (NYSE:LM) have achieved the Approved Product List Certification from the Defense Department’s Joint Inter-operability Testing Command (JITC).  According to a release, this certification provides every Department of Defense and Civilian Agency within the Federal government the assurance that both the 1830 Photonic Service Switch and 1626 Light Manager will meet required specifications and work together with other JITC-certified network hardware and software.
