Laverne Cox is an American actor and LGBTQ+ advocate who is best known for her role as Sophia Burset on Netflix‘s Orange Is the New Black. Thanks to her work on the show, Cox became the first transgender person nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

In 2015, she won a Daytime Emmy Award as an executive producer for Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word — making her the first transgender person to do so. In 2017, Cox  In 2017, she became the first transgender person to play a transgender series regular on U.S. broadcast TV; she did so by playing Cameron Wirth on the CBS series Doubt.

Other firsts include: first transgender person to appear on the cover of Time magazine; first transgender person on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine, first transgender person to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds.

Additionally, Cox was a contestant on season 1 of VH1’s I Want to Work for Diddy. She also co-hosted and co-produced the VH1 series TRANSform Me.
