6 Improvements We Want to See for the New ‘Fallout 4′
It’s official: Fallout 4 is coming. Developer Bethesda released the trailer above to get fans hyped up for the game. More will be shown at Bethesda’s E3 press event on June 14.
There’s a lot we don’t know about the game, like when it’s coming out, or what the basic story will be. But we do know it’s coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. We know it’s set in Boston and that it will probably involve the Brotherhood of Steel somehow, based on the iconic armor shown in the trailer and on the game’s cover.
Now is as good a time as any to come up with a wish list for the game. To be clear, I’m not an objective observer. Fallout 3 is probably my favorite game of all time. I’ve poured more hours into it than any other game. I’ve played it until I could see the Wasteland every time I shut my eyes. I’m crazy about it. Here’s what I’d love to see in the sequel.
Some color, for heaven’s sake
Yes, the world of Fallout takes place after a nuclear apocalypse destroyed just about everything. Yes, the world is in ruins. But does everything have to be so grimy? The color pallet of Fallout 3 ranges from sooty gray to dusty brown, and that’s about it.
But many people are still alive in this world. Surely they would like a dash of color in their lives. Based on the trailer, things are looking good on this front. It’s no Splatoon, but the sky is blue and not every building is burnt to soot and ashes. That’s a great start.
Better shooting mechanics
Fallout 3 was a hybrid between an open-world role-playing game and a shooter. It nailed the feeling of the open world, but its shooting mechanics leave a lot to be desired. It isn’t anywhere near the level of a Call of Duty or even a Borderlands game.
It does have one fantastic saving grace, however, with its V.A.T.S. system, which lets you pause the game to set up a series of quick-fire shots — assuming you have enough V.A.T.S. points stashed away. But outside of V.A.T.S. the shooting feels clunky. Here’s hoping the gunplay in Fallout 4 is as remarkable as the open world.
A big focus on the dog
The dog in Fallout 3 — who was named Dogmeat by the way — was one of the best parts of the game. A canine friend is the best kind of companion to have while you wander the Wasteland. Based on the trailer for Fallout 4, it looks like a dog companion will play a big role.
While the world of Fallout 3 was filled with hints and clues about what life was like before the nuclear war, it only had one main flashback that actually put you in that pre-apocalyptic world.
The trailer for Fallout 4 keeps flashing back and forth between the two time periods. Because the retro suburban environment looks so inviting, I’m hoping we get to explore a decent chunk of the world before the bombs go off.
Big graphical upgrade
Since Fallout 4 is launching only on the latest systems, it’s sure to look a heck of a lot better than its 2008 predecessor. Even the leap between the developers two most recent open-world games — Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — was huge, and those were on the same platforms. I can’t wait to see what the developers can do with the new, powerful hardware.
A talking hero
The idea behind some role-playing games is that you can put yourself in the shoes of the hero. You choose what the hero says and does, which helps you feel like you’re actually in the world. Both Fallout 3 and Skyrim had silent heroes. You could choose their replies during conversations by selecting text on the screen, but you never actually heard their voices.
The hero in the trailer, a former citizen of Vault III, says to his dog, “Let’s go, pal.” Does that mean he has a voice in the game? That would be a step forward, and would bring him in line with other heroes of open-world games like Mass Effect and The Witcher 3.
