The rumors have been swirling with the force of a thousand tornados this week. That’s because the Electronic Entertainment Expo — better known as E3 — is right around the corner. E3 is the biggest video game conference in the world, and every major publisher is gearing up to reveal some of the biggest games of the next couple of years. Naturally, some details will spill out unintentionally.
As with every week, not all of these rumors may pan out. For more measured E3 predictions, check out our series of articles on what we think will be shown at the conference by Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, EA, Ubisoft, and other big publishers.
1. Forza 6 details leak
This leak goes back to Microsoft’s Japanese Xbox website, which briefly listed all kinds of previously unannounced details about the big racing game of fall 2015, Forza 6. The page has been removed, but not before ICXM scooped up the information. According to the site:
Forza Motorsport 6 will be getting a huge amount of information at E3 and much of that has already been published to the Xbox Japan official website. The game will feature many fan-requested features including weather effects and night time racing as well as over 450 cars at launch with 26 unique locations to race on.
Forza Motorsport 6 is said to run at 1080p and 60 frames per second and features wet weather, 3D puddles, and night racing to test your driving skills. Cutting-edge ForzaTech (which Microsoft recently trade-marked) engine technology powers the unrelenting action and state-of-the-art-physics at simulation speed.
I’m not sure what 3D puddles are, but I know I’ll demand them in all racing games from here on out.
2. Dark Souls 3 to be announced at E3?
According to an unidentified source speaking with VG247, Namco is currently working on Dark Souls 3, and is planning to officially announce the game at E3.
The game is being helmed by series regular Hidetaka Miyazaki, who also directed Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Demon’s Souls. While Miyazaki didn’t direct Dark Souls 2, he did supervise the project.
All of the games in the loose series are action role-playing games that are known for their bleakness and uncompromising level of challenge. To fans of that sort of thing, this could be big news.
3. Will Fallout 4 launch in 2015?
One of the biggest video game reveals of the year happened last week, with Bethesda pulling back the curtain on Fallout 4 by releasing the (great-looking) trailer above. The company hasn’t announced a release date for the game yet, although many expect an announcement at Bethesda’s E3 press conference.
However, the Bethesda store may have outed the release year. On the page for Fallout 4, Bethesda originally had an “estimated ship date” set for “TBA 2015.” The page has since been changed to simply say “TBA,” but don’t be surprised if the game launches this fall.
4. Is a 1TB PlayStation 4 en route?
According to documents filed with the FCC, two new models of the PlayStation 4 may be heading our way. One is effectively just like the current version, with a 500GB hard drive. The other comes with twice the hard drive space — 1 terabyte, to be exact.
In this age of enormous games, releasing a console with a 1TB hard drive is a no-brainer. I know from experience that it doesn’t take many games to fill up 500GB worth of space. I expect a 1TB PS4 announcement at E3.
5. 1TB Xbox One outed by Amazon
The PS4 isn’t the only console to get 1TB hard drive rumors. Amazon briefly listed a 1TB version of the Xbox One that comes with a new controller that sports a built-in headphone jack. (On current Xbox One controllers, you need an adapter to plug in a set of headphones.) The new version of the console also comes with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and costs $400.
Amazon has removed the listing, but because of its specificity, this bundle seems as close to a sure thing as you can get. Look for an announcement at Microsoft’s E3 press conference.
6. Is Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons coming to current-gen consoles?
Sometimes it’s a retailer that leaks an upcoming game; other times it’s a ratings board. This time it’s the latter. The German video game ratings board has posted a listing for the gorgeous indie game Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
The game, which originally came out on last-generation hardware, was good enough to rank on our list of The 5 Best Puzzle Games Ever Made. It tells the fable-like story of two brothers who go on an adventure to save their ailing father. If you missed it during its original release, this could be a good way to play it — assuming the rumor is true.
7. Will Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 be revealed June 12?
The Dutch website Gamer.nl has reportedly seen an advertisement for the as-yet-unannounced soccer game PES 2016 that says a “full reveal” is coming June 12. The site also reports that the news was confirmed by a Konami marketing manager, who said the game is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and mobile platforms.
Maybe Konami isn’t completely ditching its console business after all.
8. Nintendo leak generator
This one’s not a rumor or a leak, but it’s funny enough to deserve a mention here. It’s a spoof Nintendo leak generator. Each time you visit http://tane.us/nintendo/, you get a new sheet with made-up Nintendo games “scheduled” to appear at Nintendo’s digital event. I got The Legend of Zelda: Frail Moat and Wii Pants U, both of which sound amazing.
