Is Amazon Angering Apple With This Move?

Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) app store is being unveiled in five European countries, including the UK. The service had been limited to the U.S. until now. France, Germany, Spain, and Italy are the others to come under the expansion that will be open to the public later in the summer. Amazon is currently accepting developer submissions to the platform that lets users purchase and download Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android applications. Amazon offers more than 31,000 apps on the store through its online retail platform and supports several handsets and tablets, including its Kindle line.

According to Amazon, its application store is different from Google Play even though they both use the Android platform because it “curates” its apps before offering them to users. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) also includes an “Editors Choice” section on its application store, which also essentially recommends certain program to users, and Nokia (NYSE:NOK) does the same with its “Nokia Collection” on its Lumia handsets.

“We are excited to open the door to even more opportunity by expanding app sales outside the US,” Amazon Appstore vice president Jim Adkins said in a statement. “We see tremendous potential for current developers in our distribution program to grow with the international expansion.”

The Amazon Appstore launched in March 2011 with exclusive early access to Rovio’s Angry Birds Rio, but Apple sued the company for using the brand name “Appstore,” which the iPhone maker said violated the trademark of its App Store service that does essentially the same on the iOS platform. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) was one of the companies to come to Amazon’s defense, arguing that the term was too general to be trademarked.
