Amazon Rings in Yet Another Successful Retail Season

The year 2013 was a good one for Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), and Christmas 2013 was no different. Although there were some bumps in the road when it came to delivering packages on time, the online retailer released impressive figures Thursday as it illuminated the high points of one of its most successful retail years — ever.

According to Seeking Alpha, Amazon Prime, the retailer’s annual membership program that offers unlimited Free Two-Day Shipping on millions of items, especially enjoyed success this holiday season, as more than one million customers became new Prime members in the third week of December, and on Amazon’s peak shipping day, more Prime items were shipped worldwide than ever before. Amazon now boasts tens of millions of Prime members worldwide and Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, asserts, “They benefit from all-you-can-eat free two-day shipping on millions of eligible items and our members have a voracious appetite.”

Another Amazon feature that has proven popular among consumers late in 2013 is Amazon’s new “Mayday” tech support. On Christmas Day, Amazon proved that its Mayday feature — which instantly connects Kindle Fire HDX owners with an Amazon customer service representatives via video chat — more than lives up to its promises as Mayday response time on Kindle Fire HDX was just 9 seconds on average on December 25, even better than the 15 second response time that Amazon shoots for. Mayday reflects the online retailer’s efforts to compensate for not having the readily available face-to-face tech support that rivals like Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE:WMT) and Target (NYSE:TGT) can promise. With Mayday, consumers can get their tech questions answered without even having to leave the comfort of their own homes.

Amazon also highlighted noteworthy digital media, shipping, customer purchases, and best seller news Thursday via Seeking Alpha, offering significant statistics, such as the fact that Cyber Monday shoppers ordered more than 36.8 million items worldwide on the shopping holiday following Thanksgiving, reflecting a record-breaking 426 items per second. To do so, more than half of customers shopped using a mobile device this holiday, and between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, Amazon customers ordered more than five toys per second from a mobile device.

But consumers weren’t only going for toys this holiday season. They also went for tech devices. The Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch, and Kindle Fire HDX 8.9-inch were Amazon’s best tablet sellers, while Samsung’s 32 Smart LED HTDV and 40 LED HDTV took the lead for TVs. As for laptops, the Samsung Chromebook and the ASUS Transformer Book were the most popular, while Call of Duty: Ghosts, Just Dance 2014, and Grand Theft Auto V were the hottest video games sold. Amazon shipped to 185 countries this holiday, and according to Seeking Alpha, Amazon.com shipped enough items with Prime this holiday to deliver at least one gift to every household in America.
