Apple Forced to Fall in Line in Korea
Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) success around the world is coming with some culture lessons. The company has finally bowed to regulations in South Korea that require defective products to be exchanged with brand-new devices for up to one month after purchase, no questions asked.

While Apple adjusted its policy accordingly for the iPhone in September, according to local newspaper The Chosunilbo, the country’s fair trade commission had been on the company’s back to adhere to the rule for the iPod and the iPad as well. On April 1, the commission added to the pressure by revising product information guidelines so manufacturers had to “indicate warranty standards that are disadvantageous to consumers in detail on the outside of packaging.”
According to the report, Apple was previously replacing defective iPods and iPads with refurbished devices.
“Consumers will be protected under Korean warranty standards for all of Apple’s small electronic gadgets sold here from now on,” an official from the local FTC told The Chosunilbo. The Korean FTC official added that the organization will keep a close watch on all electronics companies to ensure warranty standards were being observed properly.
The iPad 3 only went on sale in the country last month, but Apple’s tablets are considered to be outperforming rival Samsung’s Galaxy Tab in what is the latter’s home market. Apple is estimated to have sold over one million units of the iPad. While Samsung does not release its sales numbers, estimates peg the Apple tablet’s share to be between 70 percent and 80 percent for the region.
