Apple Recap: New Monster Rival, Killer App On Way, Launch Delays Expected
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) fell 0.31 percent on Thursday to $434.33 as the tech world took in a new, massive smartphone from Samsung (SSNLF.PK). There was also reports that the iPhone maker’s new mobile product line may be delayed — possibly weighing the stock down. Apple’s Monster New Rival
Samsung is bringing out the big guns against Apple, unveiling on Thursday the biggest smartphone to date — the Galaxy Mega — which features a massive 6.3-inch screen. For comparison, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has a Kindle Fire tablet only slightly larger than that with a 7-inch screen. Samsung says the size makes the smartphone ideal for watching videos or running two apps alongside each other — less ideal for carrying in one’s pocket, though, or even a small purse. A Killer App on Way?
Analysts are expecting big things out of Apple in the coming months, as the iPhone maker is expected to debut a new “killer app” at its Worldwide Developers Conference this coming June. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty was the one to suggest the likelihood of such a “killer app” coming out with an updated iOS 7 and iPhone 5S. But just what that application might be is up for debate. Some speculate that it could be a mobile wallet, while others lean towards a radio service. Delays Lined Up?
According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo, a number of Apple products that market watchers are expecting in the next few months might be a little delayed, and sales could fall short as a result. Among the items Kuo talked about in a research note were the iPhone 5S, a new iPad Mini, and a low-cost iPhone. For the iPhone 5S, Kuo said there would be trouble getting it out on time due to struggles implementing fingerprint scanning technology. Along with this, he said the company might need more time to finish and adequately test iOS 7, and that could delay the launch of the device. (Read more)
