Analyst: Apple’s Display Future Looks Like This

Topeka Capital analyst Brian White Sharp has said it’s inevitable for Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) to start using Sharp’s new IGZO technology, which was showed off by the manufacturer at the Consumer Electronics Show as the future of mobile displays.

Sharp said the advanced displays had twice the resolution of a conventional LCD screen with up to 90 percent power savings. They can also continue to display an image when the power is turned off.

The buzz about Apple possibly buying the new screens has been swirling for a while, with word a few months ago that it was investigating using the panels in the third-generation iPad. That, according to some reports, didn’t happen because the technology was not ready for mass production. Sharp was accompanied at the IGZO demonstration by Apple mobile display supplier Corning (NYSE:GLW).

White, who attended the demonstration, wrote in a research note after the event that Apple would be the “prime candidate” to adopt IGZO for its mobile devices. While using it would help Apple compete more strongly with Samsung (SSNLF.PK), such a deal with Sharp would also reduce its reliance on LG Display (NYSE:LPL), he said. The Apple display manufacturer had struggled to meet the required standards and quantities for the iPad’s Retina display in early 2012.

“We believe it is only a matter of time before [Apple adopts IGZO] as Apple increasingly requires new innovative display technologies to compete with Samsung, which could lessen [the former’s] reliance on LG Display for certain product categories in the future,” White wrote, according to Barron’s. “As we have previously indicated, we expect Apple to launch a full-blown Apple TV over the next year or two, and we believe Sharp will be providing the panels with the LCD glass supplied by Corning.”
