Browett, 48, comes from the U.K.’s largest consumer-electronics retailer, Dixons Retail Plc (DXNS), where he served as CEO. He will lead Apple’s efforts to build more retail sites outside the U.S., particularly in China, where the Shanghai, Beiging and Hong Kong outlets are noted as some of the company’s busiest locations. At the end of its last fiscal year, Apple had 36,000 retail employees.

According to a statement from Apple, Browett, who’s replacing Ron Johnson, will start his new position in April. Johnson left Apple last year to take the reigns as CEO of JC Penney Co. Browett has become the first outside senior-executive hire made by Apple CEO Tim Cook.
