Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) latest Apple Store made its debut in Adelaide, Australia this weekend. Although this is the twentieth Apple Store to open in Australia, it is the first Apple Store to serve the South Australia region.
The Apple Store is located in Adelaide’s Rundle Mall and is reported to have cost approximately $2.5 million. The Adelaide Apple Store employs over 100 local people, and judging from initial reports it appears it will have plenty of local customers to keep those employees busy. According to Adelaide Now, over 100 customers were lined up outside the store three hours before the official opening.
However, other sources have reported that the crowd had tripled in size by the time the doors officially opened at 10 AM local time. Apple has announced that the first 1000 customers will receive a commemorative t-shirt.
Similar to many Apple Stores, this Australian branch will feature 120 “touch points” for customers to interact with the latest Apple devices. The store also features Apple’s “new” style of Genius Bar where Apple Geniuses sit next to the customers they are assisting rather than across from them.
Apple’s latest retail store will also feature a self-service shopping experience option as customers will be able to scan barcodes with their iPhones and pay through their iTunes accounts without ever standing in line. Customers can also schedule in-store appointments with their iPhones and attend instructional workshops.
Apple analyst Horace Dediu at Asymco notes that Apple Stores are the most successful retail stores in the U.S. based on sales per square foot. According to Dediu’s analysis, each Apple Store averages revenue of $13 million per quarter. The last quarter showed that the average Apple Store customer spent $57.60 per visit.
