Apple’s Newsstand May Prove Positive for Periodicals

If Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) was a game-changer for the music industry, it may now be doing its bit for the newspaper and magazine publishing industry. Apparently Apple’s newly launched iTunes feature, Newsstand, which provides publishers with dedicated shelf space provided they sign on with Apple, has boosted sales for the publications.

Subscription sales figures have been provided by Popular Science, and there is an appreciable jump in October corresponding with the launch of Newsstand. According to Mag+ CEO Staffan Ekholm, “the really promising indicator for Pop Sci isn’t the one-week sales leap of 13 percent — it’s that the magazine’s growth picked up after that week, with more velocity”.

Though the initial response is encouraging, more data is required of actual sales increases from the bigger publications such as The New York Times (NYSE:NYT), Gannett Co (NYSE:GCI), and News Corp. (NASDAQ:NWSA).
