AT&T Wards Off Increasing iPhone Competition

With more carriers entering the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone market this year, AT&T (NYSE:T) has not seen customers flocking to new providers Sprint (NYSE:S) and Verizon (NYSE:VZ). In fact, the company has seen record sales.

In a MarketWatch story, Glen Lurie, president of emerging devices for AT&T, said that “churn has not moved at all.” An industry term, churn refer to customers who cancel services.

Lurie noted the carrier saw record sales from Apple’s new iPhone 4S. Customers have been willing to wait two weeks for the new device but it hasn’t caused them to switch carriers. He noted that IT departments have finally warmed up to Apple’s operating system, iOS, and the phone is now in the work place more so than in the last few years.

In regards to other smartphones, Lurie was very PC and said investors should not count out Nokia Corp. (NYSE:NOK) and Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ:RIMM) phones. He believes that as a carrier, it’s good to have them for competition and innovation.
