There is a new development in the battle between arch rivals Qihoo (NYSE:QIHU) and Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU). Baidu has finally released an antivirus PC software in China after months of testing it in Southeast Asia. This is a new challenge to their rival Qihoo, which is known for their antivirus software, but also edged in on Baidu’s market by releasing a search engine last summer.
The Baidu antivirus app was produced in collaboration with security expert Kapersky. According to Tech In Asia, it is not sure whether the Baidu app is the same one that was released overseas as the “Baidu PC Faster.” This new app is only taking on a limited number of beta testers and was labeled v1.0 beta 1 when it was released in the Chinese market.
Baidu is releasing the new app while Qihoo is facing criticism. Qihoo is facing numerous allegations of improper data collection and exploiting those who use its apps, such as its 360 Browser for Windows or its antivirus software. Qihoo has been facing problems recently as a respected Chinese magazine called them the “cancer of the internet” and Apple banned all of the company iOS apps.
This might be Baidu trying to take advantage of its competitor’s problems in order to crack into their market. Additionally, it may also be motivated by Qihoo edging in on Baidu’s market with their release of a new search engine last year.
