Dell Establishes European Headquarters in Ireland and 2 Other Hot Stocks to Watch

It was announced Friday that Dell’s financial services unit is establishing a European headquarters in Ireland, making the company the most recent multinational to exploit that country’s lower corporate tax rates. Dell thus joins firms such as the online holiday-rental service AirBnB, which in September said that it was locating its European headquarters in Ireland, along with Google and Apple. Dell Financial Services, which offers financing to Dell customers, said Thursday it will ultimately create 300 jobs in the country, in which unemployment stands at 13.7 percent. Dell’s existing operations in Ireland already employs 2,500 people in Dublin, Cork, and Limerick.


Violin Memory Inc. (NYSE:VMEM): Current price $7.46

Shares of the flash-based enterprise data storage systems maker Violin Memory Inc. are down almost 17 percent in heavy trading in the company’s first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The company priced its initial public offering for 18 million shares at $9 a share, the mid-point of a proposed range of $8 to $10.


General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE): Current price $24.03

General Electric’s GE Healthcare announced Friday that it has won a tender to exclusively supply next-generation sequencing services to a research group at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. The sequencing services will be provided by a GE Healthcare subsidiary, SeqWright Genomic Services, which provides nucleic acid sequencing plus other genomic services. The first clinical study employing the “next generation” sequencing tech will focus on identifying mutations and genetic variants linked with metastatic breast cancer.
