Here’s the Latest Carrier to Jump on the Apple iPad Bandwagon
U.S. Cellular (NYSE:USM) will soon become the next major U.S. carrier to offer Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iPads. According to an announcement posted on the company’s official website, the nation’s fifth-largest carrier will begin offering the 9.7-inch iPad Air and the 7.9-inch iPad mini with Retina display on November 8. A U.S. Cellular spokesperson said that the company intended to feature a range of data plans for 3G/LTE-capable iPad buyers, reports Electronista.
The announcement comes a week after U.S. Cellular revealed that it would begin carrying the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S on November 8. U.S. Cellular’s announcement also follows the news that Apple’s tablets will be offered “in the coming weeks” by American regional carriers C Spire and Bluegrass Cellular.
T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) made a similar announcement earlier this week, when Apple first unveiled the new iPad models. U.S. Cellular’s announcement means that Apple now has distribution deals for its iPhones and iPads with all five of the top U.S. carriers: AT&T (NYSE:T), Sprint (NYSE:S), Verizon (NYSE:VZ), and T-Mobile all currently offer Apple’s iPhones and iPads.
Apple’s iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display were first introduced at a media event in San Francisco on October 22. The iPad Air is 20 percent thinner and 28 percent lighter than the fourth-generation iPad. Apple’s flagship iPad was also upgraded with a 64-bit A7 processor – the same chip found in the iPhone 5S, while the iPad mini was upgraded with a Retina display. Both new iPads were also outfitted with the new M7 motion coprocessor that helps extend battery life.
“iPad created an entirely new mobile computing experience, and the new iPad Air is another big leap ahead. It is so thin, light and powerful, once you hold one in your hand you will understand what a tremendous advancement this is,” noted Apple senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller.
