Intel, Dell, and HP May Feel Pinch from This Scarcity

Floods in Thailand have caused a scarcity of hard disk drives. This is likely to adversely affect motherboard shipments by Taiwanese manufacturers for the fourth quarter.

If motherboard shipments slip, CPUs from Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) and AMD (NYSE:AMD) would also be affected. Apart from the impact on Taiwanese motherboard makers, DigiTimes reported last week that some PC manufacturers may have to stop production due to a lack of drives. This will clearly impact hardware retailers Dell (NASDAQ:DELL), HP (NYSE:HPQ), and possibly Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL).

Disruptions in hard disk supplies due to the Thai floods was predicted by HIS iSuppli last month. The firm estimates shipments to decline by 27.7% q/q.
