Is Apple About to Release a New Thunderbolt Display?

apple macIs Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) about to debut a new version of its popular Thunderbolt Display? MacTrast reports that retail stock of the premium display is either completely depleted or at very low levels at several different Apple resellers.

A reduction in product stock for third-party vendors typically indicates a hardware production cutback from Apple, which in turn can be a sign that the company is preparing to launch a new iteration of a product. According to MacTrast, a customer service representative from online Apple reseller Adorama said, “The manufacturer is no longer allowing us to order new inventory for this item, and it has been removed from our system.”

Similarly, Apple retailer Micro Center reported that it is also currently unable to reorder more Thunderbolt Displays from Apple. Apple’s 27-inch Thunderbolt Display has not been refreshed since its debut in 2011. While the current Thunderbolt Display features a 2560 by 1440 pixels screen size, Apple Insider notes that a blue-and-green wave background seen in Apple’s OS X Mavericks promotional material is 5,120 x 2,880 pixels – exactly double the current Thunderbolt Display size.

The tantalizing OS X Mavericks wallpaper image, along with the sudden decline in third-party vendor stock levels has led many Apple watchers to speculate that the Cupertino-based company is on the cusp of revealing a massive new high-resolution display. A brand-new Thunderbolt Display would also nicely complement the upgraded Mac Pro that Apple unveiled at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference.

However, it should also be noted that Apple has not yet announced a new Thunderbolt Display, so its release would be an unexpected surprise.
