Is this retailer’s latest iPhone discount promotion another sign that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is gearing up for a refresh of its flagship smartphone? Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) is offering a $50 price deduction on several models of Apple’s iPhone when the device is bought in conjunction with a two-year contract.
The iPhone sales promotion begins this Sunday and runs for the next four weeks. The retailer is offering the discount on the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5 models. However, Best Buy is only offering the $50 discount for customers that sign a 2-year contract with AT&T (NYSE:T), Sprint (NYSE:S), or Verizon (NYSE:VZ). This leaves recent Apple adopter T-Mobile (TMUS) out of the loop.
Best Buy is also giving users of devices running Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform a price discount in time for the upcoming holiday. Beginning Sunday, May 26 and running through June 1, Best Buy will be offering discounts on various Samsung (SSNLF.PK) and HTC devices. Customers that purchase a Samsung Galaxy S III with an AT&T or Sprint contract will get a $50 discount. Similarly, customers that purchase the HTC Droid DNA with a Verizon contract will get a $150 discount. The HTC One X will be offered with a $100 discount, which makes the device free for customers that sign up through AT&T.
Unlike the week-long Samsung and HTC sales promotions, Best Buy’s iPhone sale is running for a full month. This is slightly unusual since Apple does not typically offer many discounts on its premium smartphone. This has led some Apple watchers to speculate that the iPhone maker may be trying to push more units out of stores to make room for a new iPhone model.
Here’s how Apple and Best Buy has traded over this past week.
