Does Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new Stanford 2 retail store in Northern California demonstrate an evolving Apple Store aesthetic? Ever since the first Apple Store opened in 2001, the retail chain has received accolades for its unique store design and unmistakable branding. Most Apple Stores feature sparse, minimalist interiors constructed from wood, stone, and glass materials.
Although this latest store has the essential design elements of a typical Apple Store, it also features a slightly altered design approach with the incorporation of a “floating” roof reports ifoAppleStore. Although the glass front has already been installed, it has yet to be covered with a “thin, light-color material” that will conceal the structural steel roof supports and create a “floating” appearance.
MacRumors notes that the Stanford 2 store design most closely resembles Apple Stores in Portland, Oregon, and Aix en-Provence, France. However, unlike those locations, this store will also include a stone wall that divides the front from the standard long tables and Genius Bar. This new Stanford 2 Apple Store will replace a mini-store located about 700 feet away that has been there since 2004.
The Apple Store at the Stanford Shopping Center was designed by Foster + Partners, the same design firm that is constructing Apple’s “spaceship” Campus 2 office building. This firm is also building Apple’s new retail location in Union Square, San Francisco. The Stanford 2 Apple Store is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
Apple Stores are the most successful retail stores in the U.S. based on sales per square foot. Apple analyst Horace Dediu at Asymco estimates that each Apple Store averages revenue of $13 million per quarter. The last quarter showed that the average Apple Store customer spent $57.60 per visit.
