Is This the iPhone 5C Camera?

Source: mobile.it168.comWill Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) low-cost iPhone feature a premium camera? A leaked image that purports to show the camera module for the iPhone 5C suggests that the upcoming budget version of Apple’s iPhone will have a camera with a sapphire crystal cover, which is identical to the one found in the current iPhone 5.

The leaked image comes courtesy of the Chinese website IT168, and was first reported by MacRumors. According to a Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) translation of the website, the module is an 8-megapixel rear camera. The site also claims that the front-facing camera will feature a 1.2-megapixel lens.

Earlier this week, an image of some plastic iPhone 5C packaging appeared on the China-based WeiPhone forums. It is widely believed that this is the designator that Apple will be using for its new plastic iPhone. Some commentators have speculated that the “C” stands for “color,” since multiple images of plastic iPhone casings in different colors have already been leaked online.

Although it is commonly referred to as a “low-cost iPhone,” some analysts believe the device will actually be priced as a mid-range smartphone. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo  has predicted that the device will cost between $450 and $550, reports Apple Insider.

Since the iPhone 5C will be equipped with the same camera hardware that is found in the iPhone 5, it is likely that the iPhone 5S will feature an upgraded camera. Previous leaks have shown that the iPhone 5S camera will have a dual LED flash.

A recent research note from analyst Kuo via Apple Insider indicated that the iPhone 5S may have a limited availability after its initial launch, due to unspecified production difficulties. It is possible that the production difficulties are related to the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor in Apple’s next flagship device.
