Leak: Here Is Apple’s Fifth-Generation iPad Casing
Photos reportedly showing the rear casing for Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) upcoming fifth-generation iPad have emerged online, Apple Insider reports. The images come courtesy of FanaticFone, a site that has previously claimed to have obtained photos of the iPhone 5S display assembly.
The images show a silver-colored back casing for an iPad. According to FanaticFone, the casing measures 9.45 inches by 6.6 inches. This would make the next-generation iPad slightly smaller than the current iteration of iPads, which are 9.5 inches long by 7.3 inches wide.
The website also notes that the distance between the border and the screen appears to be much narrower, at 3 mm. Previous industry rumors reported by Korean site ETNews have also said the upcoming iPad will have a narrower bezel than the current model. According to FanaticFone, the casing weighs about 3.5 ounces.
The supposed fifth-generation iPad also appears to be borrowing design elements from the iPad mini. The volume button construction and placement of the speakers are similar to the iPad mini’s design. FanaticFone also reports that the Apple logo on the rear casing is now silver instead of black.
Last month the French website Nowhereelse.fr posted what it said were schematics for the upcoming iPad. The size of the iPad depicted in those schematics appears to be close to the measurements reported by FanaticFone. Nowhereelse.fr also reported that the fifth-generation iPad design seemed to borrow heavily from the iPad mini.
This latest leak also seems to be in line with some analyst predictions. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said the new iPad would be approximately 15 percent thinner and 25 to 33 percent lighter than the last generation of iPads, MacRumors reports.
