Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has unveiled yet another snarky advertisement that pits a 32 GB Surface RT against Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) 32 GB iPad. Similar to a previously released commercial, this ad also includes an apologetic Siri that makes excuses for the features that Apple’s iPad lacks.
The ad starts with Siri saying, “Oh no, here we go again,” before Microsoft commences to demonstrate Surface RT features that the iPad doesn’t have. Microsoft opens its attack by showing that the Surface RT has a built-in stand for tabletop use.
Microsoft then knocks Apple for not including a USB port on the iPad. A user demonstrates a keyboard that easily attaches to the bottom of the tablet via magnets. However, the small print on the screen states, “Keyboard sold separately.” This fact seems to render this advantage moot since Apple also sells wireless keyboards separate from the iPad.
Finally, Microsoft ends with what it probably considers its tablet’s strongest selling point — the price. Microsoft’s 32 GB Surface RT sells for $349 (not including keyboard) while Apple’s 32 GB iPad retails for $599. However, the price discrepancy wasn’t always so large.
The software giant recently announced that it was discounting the price of its Surface RT in an attempt to boost sales. This tablet price reduction resulted in a $900 million writedown that was revealed in Microsoft’s disappointing earnings announcement on Friday reports the Wall Street Journal.
Here’s how Apple and Microsoft closed out the week on Friday.
