NFC-Enabled Phones On the Rise for 2012
According to IMS Research data, global shipments of near-field communication NFC-enabled smartphones are forecast to rise this year to 80 million units, increasing from 2011’s 35 million shipped units. Greater gains could come with the inclusion of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) phones.
With the addition of NFC to its next generation iPhones, global NFC smartphone shipments could rose to more than 100 million units in 2012.
LTE models are also expected to be on the rise this year.Smartphone vendors such as Samsung Electronics, Motorola Mobility (NYSE:MMI), HTC, Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) and LG Electronics have expressed interest in the the new mobile payment network, Isis. This is offered through a joint venture by AT&T (NYSE:T), Verizon (NYSE:VZ) and T-Mobile.
Phones in Europe will also have the opportunity for the mobile payments.Leading telecom companies including Vodafone (NASDAQ:VOD), Telefonica/O2 and Everything Everywhere will also offer it this year, according to Digitimes.
