Nokia Battles with Analyst Over Lumia’s Prospects

Nokia’s (NYSE:NOK) Lumia phones have had some negative publicity with one analyst cutting sales estimates. Nokia shares reacted with an immediate 10% haircut.

Nokia shot back with claims that “Lumia 800 sales in the U.K. are off to an excellent start. Based on earliest data the sales start of the Lumia 800 is the best ever first week of Nokia Smartphone sales in the U.K. in recent history. By our measures, we have gained significant Smartphone sell-out share in the channels in which we are operating in the U.K.”

This may be a part of the usual sequence new mobile devices go through. First, news about positive market acceptance, then negative analyst and brokerage reports followed by a gradual equity price decline. Even Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 4S went through this cycle.

It may be too early to write-off the Lumia phones considering a number of key operators have yet to launch. On a heartening note, Vodafone (NASDAQ:VOD) and Orange are seeing good sales, so if the Lumia can get Symbian and Blackberry (NASDAQ:RIMM) users to cross over, Nokia might be over the hump.
